What is cave descent?

Cave descent, also known as caving or speleology, combines the passion for underground exploration with adventure techniques such as rappelling and scrambling. It is a scientific and sporting discipline that explores and studies natural cavities formed by geological processes—such as limestone dissolution or erosion—over millions of years. To enter the underground world, rappelling techniques must be used, allowing vertical descent with a variable friction descender (like a rack) and certified harnesses.

Scrambling, in turn, involves moving through horizontal or inclined sections without a rope, using pins, steps or bolts anchored into the rock. Basic equipment includes a helmet with headlamp, waist and chest harness, energy absorber, lanyard, descender and sturdy gloves. It is also recommended to wear quick-drying thermal clothing and grippy-soled footwear for uneven terrain.

Speleology requires planning: it’s vital to study the cave’s topography, check the weather conditions, and coordinate the exploration with expert guides. These professionals ensure safety, identify risk points (such as sudden floods, low oxygen zones, or rockfalls), and assist with self-rescue or helping companions in difficulty. There are various levels of difficulty, from easy tourist routes (well-equipped caves for beginners) to technical expeditions in deep and complex cavities. Proper training allows participants to move with confidence, enjoy stalactites, stalagmites, and rock columns, and learn about the unique biodiversity that inhabits these dark ecosystems.

CAVE DESCENT WITH CATALONIA ADVENTURES

We’ll begin with a 15–20 minute walk to reach the cave entrance. There, we’ll gear up and enter the cave through a narrow crack in the rock. Once inside, the gallery opens up and we’ll be able to walk through the interior, sometimes descending or scrambling as we encounter obstacles. A 7-meter-deep shaft awaits us, which we’ll descend using “electron” ladders (metal ladders designed to assist us). The bravest participants can explore very narrow, yet very fun, galleries.

Who can use the cave descent baptism gift voucher?
Anyone with normal physical condition. Children from age 14 and up.

Who cannot use the voucher?
People with heart conditions, epilepsy, spinal problems, dislocated upper or lower limbs, and pregnant women.
